Google is answering with AI. Is your business part of the answer?

·

Google is changing how people discover products, services and businesses. For some searches, an AI-generated answer now appears before anyone visits a website. What does that mean for your visibility — and what can you actually do about it?

Imagine someone searching for this: “I run a clinic with several practitioners. How can I manage bookings, send reminders and reduce no-shows?”

Not long ago, they might have opened several search results before finding a useful answer. Now, for certain queries, Google can display an AI-generated overview along with links to relevant sources.

The potential customer is still there. So is the problem they need solved. What is changing is the journey between asking a question and reaching a business.

If your company offers exactly the right solution, does your website explain it clearly enough to be considered useful?

What are Google's AI Overviews?

AI Overviews are AI-generated summaries Google may show to help people understand certain questions. They can bring information together and point users toward websites worth exploring.

They do not appear for every search, and they have not replaced traditional search results.

Google also offers AI Mode, a more conversational search experience designed for more involved questions and follow-up exploration. It is related to AI Overviews, but it is not the same feature.

That is why businesses should focus less on gaming one screen and more on making their information discoverable, understandable and genuinely useful.

Why does this matter if you sell products or services?

As an illustrative example, consider a nursery selling fruit trees.

A broad search might be “fruit trees”. A more specific one could be “wholesale fruit tree nursery”. A detailed question might be: “Which fruit trees can survive regular frost, and where can I buy suitable varieties?”

These searches reflect different needs. The last one includes conditions, uncertainty and potentially a buying decision.

A website that only lists products may leave those questions unanswered. A site that explains varieties, growing conditions, availability and who it serves gives people more useful information to work with.

The opportunity is not to repeat keywords more often. It is to answer better questions.

SEO and GEO work together

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) helps search engines crawl, understand and surface relevant website content in organic results.

GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is an approach to making information clear, relevant and trustworthy for AI-driven discovery and answers.

These approaches share a foundation. Google explicitly says its AI search features do not require separate technical shortcuts or special markup beyond established SEO practices.

Useful original content, clear information architecture, internal links, technical accessibility and consistent information all remain valuable. GEO adds a deliberate focus on complex questions, search intent and the context people provide when asking for recommendations.

Our practical guide to SEO and GEO explains the distinction between a mention, a citation and an actual website visit.

What can you do to improve your chances of being discovered?

No checklist can guarantee inclusion in an AI-generated answer. But there are practical improvements that make sense for people and search engines alike.

1. Explain what your business does

Avoid empty claims such as “innovative end-to-end solutions”. Describe the service, who it is for, which problems it solves and what a customer can expect.

2. Answer real customer questions

A keyword is a word or phrase used in a search. Keywords still matter, but simply repeating them will not make your content genuinely helpful.

Think about the questions customers ask before buying: comparisons, trade-offs, practical concerns and what makes one solution suitable for a particular situation.

3. Make your content easy to navigate

Your services, product pages, articles and case studies should work together. Internal links between related content help visitors and search engines move between related information. A strong article should not be an isolated page.

4. Maintain a solid technical foundation

Content needs to be accessible to crawlers and visible as text. Check indexing eligibility, navigation, performance and the accuracy of structured data.

Structured data that describes a website can clarify certain types of information, but it is not an automatic ticket into an AI Overview.

Check the property's visibility controls in Search Console too. Google lets site owners choose whether to participate in its generative features; opting in does not guarantee that a page will be selected.

5. Provide evidence, not marketing filler

Original explanations, real examples, balanced comparisons and clearly documented results are far more useful than pages full of vague promises.

Explaining when a solution may not be the right fit is often part of earning trust.

Our Naturalia organic strategy case study documents sources and reporting periods. It provides evidence of the work and observable outcomes, rather than a guarantee of inclusion in an AI answer.

Will AI-generated answers eliminate website traffic?

AI can change whether someone needs to click through for a quick answer. But it would be misleading to claim that every search now ends without a visit.

People still need to compare solutions, explore products, assess a provider and contact businesses. The effect differs by query, topic and intent.

Instead of guessing at a universal traffic-loss percentage, ask a more actionable question: Are the right people finding your business — and are those interactions leading to real opportunities?

AI search visibility is becoming measurable

Search Console is Google's tool for reviewing crawling, indexing and performance data for a website property.

Google introduced dedicated generative AI performance reporting in Search Console in 2026, and announced worldwide rollout from August 31, 2026.

Its reporting includes visibility-related data such as impressions, surfaced pages, countries and trends over time for experiences that include AI Overviews and AI Mode.

That is useful progress for businesses that want evidence rather than vague claims. But an impression is not a lead, and appearing as a source does not guarantee a sale.

A meaningful measurement approach considers organic visibility, available AI-search visibility, visits, website engagement and — where tracking is implemented — contact requests, quote enquiries or other business outcomes.

A contact-button click and a completed enquiry are not the same event. Treat them as separate steps in the customer journey.

Frequently asked questions about AI Overviews

Can I pay to guarantee an AI Overview mention?

No SEO provider can legitimately guarantee organic inclusion as a cited source in Google's AI-generated results. Paid advertising is a separate mechanism from organic selection.

Do I need a special AI file or markup?

No. Google's guidance says there are no additional special files or structured-data requirements for its AI search features. Sound technical SEO and genuinely useful content are still the starting point.

Do FAQs help?

Well-written FAQs can help people find clear answers to real questions. They do not guarantee placement in an AI response or a special Google search result.

Are AI Overviews and ChatGPT the same thing?

No. AI Overviews and AI Mode are Google Search features. ChatGPT is a separate product. Their interfaces, retrieval methods and outputs can differ.

How can I measure visibility in Google's AI answers?

Google has introduced reporting for generative AI search features in Search Console. Review what your property's data actually shows and connect visibility to business outcomes where possible. Other AI platforms offer different levels of reporting.

Your business needs a measurable strategy, not AI promises

Search experiences are changing. Customer needs are not disappearing: people still want useful answers and trustworthy providers.

Your website should make it easy to understand what you offer, explore related information and get in touch. It should also give search engines reliable, accessible content to work with.

Being online is only the beginning. What matters is being useful, discoverable and accountable to real business goals.

Help the right customers find what you offer. At Tu WebMaster, we combine SEO, GEO and web strategy with clear objectives and measurable results.
